Who We Are

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), is one of the largest student run organizations in the United States with a total membership of over 31,000 people and is still growing. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to its mission: "To increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community". At NYU, we have been committed to participating in conferences, hosting events geared towards the professional development of our members as well as engaging in community service in our Brooklyn community.

Some of our areas of focus as a chapter are as follows:

  1. Academic Excellence:

    • Providing the Academic Pyramid of Excellence (APEx) membership to students who achieve a grade point average of at least 3.0.

    • Organising study sessions and study breaks where students can learn together and gain tips for their success.

  2. Pre-Collegiate Initiative (PCI):

    • Motivating high school students to cultivate an interest in STEM careers.

    •  Smoothing the transition from high school to college by providing support in areas such as prospective majors and application and test preparation.

  3. Conferences:

    • Attending the Fall Regional Conference and the National Convention where students can participate in workshops and events geared towards developing their social, professional and leadership skills.

    • Providing access to career fairs to further help students meet with recruiters and obtain highly-coveted internships or full-time offers.

  4. Technical Excellence:

    • Partnering with alumni, professors and corporate partners to provide students with events focused on professional development.

  5. Special Projects and Entrepreneurship:

    • Hosting events, workshops and classes that enhance students’ problem solving skills, cover how technology can be used for innovations in academia and industry, and teach emerging skills sought after by employers.

    • Expose students to the importance of entrepreneurship.

  6. Cultural awareness:

    • Providing a platform for students to discuss current issues faced by Black Students in and out of the classroom such as race, gender, politics, mental health and equality.

    • Celebrating our respective cultures and supporting black-owned businesses.
